About the Shaft Kiln

The shaft kiln, also known as a vertical shaft kiln (VSK), is a stationary, vertical furnace in which raw material and fuel are charged from the top and descend counter-current to rising combustion gases. Unlike the rotating rotary kiln, the shaft kiln relies on gravity to move material downward through successive thermal zones — preheating, calcination/sintering, and cooling — all within a single vertical cylinder.

Shaft kilns are widely used in small to medium cement plants, lime production, and industrial mineral calcination where the high capital cost and complexity of a full rotary kiln line are not justified. Mechanical Shaft Kiln

A mechanized VSK with a rotating discharge grate and screw feeder. Provides more uniform material distribution and combustion than older hand-fed kilns, with higher output and better clinker quality.

Computer-Controlled Shaft Kiln

Lime Shaft Kiln

How It Works

Working Principle of the Shaft Kiln

The shaft kiln operates on the principle of counter-current vertical heat exchange. Raw material descends through the vertical cylinder while combustion gases rise upward, transferring heat to the charge. The process unfolds across three distinct vertical zones:

  1. Charging & preheating zone (top): Crushed raw material (limestone mixed with fuel in the case of mixed-feed VSK, or briquetted raw meal) is charged from the top through a rotary distributor. Descending material meets rising hot gases from the burning zone below, preheating it and recovering waste heat.
  2. Calcination / sintering zone (middle): As material reaches the middle of the shaft, it enters the burning zone where fuel ignites and temperatures reach 1,100–1,300°C. Calcium carbonate decomposes and, for cement clinker, the minerals partially sinter. Air for combustion is injected through tuyeres around the kiln wall.
  3. Cooling zone & discharge (bottom): The calcined product continues downward into the cooling zone, where incoming combustion air is preheated by the hot clinker/lime. The cooled product is discharged continuously through the mechanical grate or screw conveyor at the kiln bottom for transport to storage.
