The cement belt conveyor is the primary in-plant material transport system in a cement plant. It moves bulk materials — limestone, clinker, coal, gypsum, additives, and finished cement — between every stage of production: from the crusher to the raw mill, from the raw mill to the silo, from the silo to the kiln, from the kiln to the cement mill, and from the mill to the packing line. Without belt conveyors, the continuous flow of material that defines modern cement production would be impossible.

In a typical cement plant, dozens of belt conveyors operate simultaneously, forming an integrated transport network. Each conveyor is sized for its specific duty — a small 500mm belt may feed additives to the raw mill at 30 t/h, while a 2,000mm belt may transport clinker from the cooler to the cement mill at 2,000 t/h. How It Works

Working Principle of Cement Belt Conveyor

The cement belt conveyor operates on a simple and proven principle: a continuous belt loop moves over rotating pulleys and idler rollers, carrying bulk material on its top (carrying) surface. The belt is driven by a motorized pulley at the discharge end and returns empty on the bottom (return) side.

  1. Material loading: Bulk material is fed onto the belt at the loading (tail) end via a chute, feeder, or another conveyor. Loading skirts on either side of the belt prevent spillage and center the material on the belt. The feed rate is matched to the belt capacity to prevent overload.
  2. Belt drive: The drive motor turns the head (drive) pulley via a gearbox. Friction between the pulley and belt pulls the belt forward at the set speed. A take-up device (screw, gravity, or hydraulic) maintains proper belt tension to ensure drive traction and prevent belt slippage.
  3. Material transport: The material rides on the belt, which is supported by troughed carrying idler sets along the conveyor length. The troughing angle (typically 30-35°) forms the belt into a U-shape, increasing the material cross-section and preventing spillage. The belt speed (1.0-5.0 m/s) is selected based on material type and capacity.
  4. Inclined transport: For conveyors with elevation changes, the belt climbs or descends on a grade. The maximum incline angle depends on material type — typically 16-20° for limestone, 12-15° for clinker, and 18-22° for cement powder. Steeper angles require chevron-pattern belts to prevent material rollback.
  5. Material discharge: At the head (discharge) end, the belt passes over the drive pulley. Material is discharged by gravity over the pulley crown into a receiving chute, bin, or onto the next conveyor. A scraper or cleaner blade removes residual material from the belt surface to prevent carryback and spillage on the return side.
  6. Belt return: The empty belt loops back to the tail end via return idlers (flat or V-shaped). A snub pulley at the tail end provides additional belt wrap for traction. The belt then passes under the loading point to receive material for the next cycle — completing the continuous loop.

How is a cement belt conveyor different from a long distance conveyor?
A cement belt conveyor is designed for in-plant material handling — typically short to medium distance (tens to hundreds of meters) with straightforward routing between fixed points. A long distance conveyor is engineered for transport over hundreds of meters to several kilometers, often outdoors, with horizontal and vertical curves to follow terrain. Both use the same belt-on-idler principle, but long distance conveyors require more complex engineering for belt tension, curve negotiation, and drive systems.
What type of belt is used for hot clinker transport?
For hot clinker (200-400°C) transport, heat-resistant belts rated for 150-200°C continuous operation are used. For very hot clinker directly from the cooler, the clinker should be cooled below 150°C before belt transport, or a special high-temperature belt (rated to 250°C) with steel cord carcass can be used. Metal apron or pan conveyors are an alternative for very hot clinker where belt temperature limits would be exceeded.
