Grinding balls are the primary grinding media used in ball mills and cement mills to reduce the particle size of feed material through impact and attrition. As the mill rotates, the grinding balls cascade and tumble, crushing the material between them and against the mill lining. The quality and characteristics of the grinding balls directly influence mill throughput, product fineness, power consumption, and overall grinding cost per ton.

For cement mill second chambers, cylpebs in the 12×12 mm to 25×25 mm range are commonly used to maximize surface area for attrition grinding. Materials & Manufacturing

Forged steel grinding balls are produced from round bar stock of alloy steel (typically B2, B3, or B4 grade) that is heated, forged into spheres, and then heat-treated through quenching and tempering to achieve the target hardness and microstructure. The forging process refines the grain structure, eliminating internal porosity and ensuring uniform hardness throughout the ball volume — not just the surface.

Cast iron balls are produced by pouring molten high-chrome white iron into molds. The high chromium content (10-30%) forms hard chromium carbides in the microstructure, providing excellent abrasion resistance. Cast balls are more economical than forged balls but may exhibit lower impact toughness, making them more suitable for applications with low to moderate impact forces.
