Product Description

In a jaw crusher, material is crushed between two jaw plates: the fixed jaw plate mounted to the front frame and the movable jaw plate attached to the swing jaw. As the eccentric shaft drives the swing jaw forward, material is compressed between the corrugated tooth surfaces of the two plates and fractured. When the jaw retracts, the crushed material drops down and is re-crushed on the next cycle until it passes through the discharge opening.

Jaw plates are the highest-consumption wear part in any jaw crusher operation. The abrasive nature of cement raw materials — limestone, shale, clinker, bauxite, and quartzite — causes continuous surface wear on the tooth profiles. Materials Comparison

Selecting the correct material grade is critical for maximizing jaw plate life. The optimal choice depends on feed material hardness, feed size, crushing ratio, and the abrasiveness of the rock being processed:

For extremely abrasive conditions — such as crushing quartzite or high-silica ores — Mn18Cr2 delivers the longest service life.

Understanding jaw plate wear patterns helps optimize crusher operation and plate selection. In a typical jaw crusher, the crushing action is not uniform across the plate surface:

  • Lower wear zone (bottom of plate): The discharge end experiences the highest compressive force and the most material sliding. This area wears fastest, especially on the movable plate.
  • Upper entry zone (top of plate): Feed material enters here at maximum size. The teeth experience high impact but lower sliding wear. Initial impact marks are common.
  • Movable vs. fixed plate: The movable jaw plate generally wears 20-30% faster than the fixed plate due to the additional sliding motion of the swing jaw.
  • Tooth tip wear: Tooth profiles gradually flatten from sharp peaks to rounded surfaces. When the tooth height is reduced by 60-70%, it is time to replace or flip the plate.
