From Blast Furnace By-Product to Premium Binder

A slag grinding plant grinds granulated blast furnace slag into a fine powder (GGBS) that replaces 30-70% of Portland cement in concrete — improving durability and cutting carbon emissions.

When iron is smelted in a blast furnace, the molten slag that floats on the iron is tapped off and rapidly quenched in water. This "granulation" freezes the molten slag into a glassy, amorphous sand — granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS). While GBFS has latent hydraulic properties, it is too coarse to react at a useful rate. Grinding it to a fineness of 400-600 m²/kg (Blaine) activates it, producing GGBS — a premium supplementary cementitious material (SCM).

GGBS is blended with Portland cement at the grinding station (producing Portland Slag Cement) or added directly at the concrete batch plant. The result is concrete with higher long-term strength, lower heat of hydration, better sulfate and chloride resistance, and a significantly lower carbon footprint — roughly 0.07 t CO₂ per tonne of GGBS versus 0.85 t per tonne of clinker.

A LIMING slag grinding plant takes wet or dry GBFS from the steel mill and produces finished GGBS powder with target fineness and moisture, ready for silo storage and bulk dispatch. Capacities range from 10 t/h for a small standalone plant to 300 t/h for a large-scale grinding terminal.
