About the Cyclone Dust Collector

The cyclone dust collector is a mechanical, centrifugal separator that removes particulate matter from a gas stream without any moving parts. Dust-laden gas enters the cylindrical body tangentially, creating a powerful spiral (vortex) flow. Centrifugal force pushes the heavier dust particles outward against the cyclone wall, where they lose momentum and spiral down into the collection hopper, while cleaned gas spirals upward through the central vortex finder and exits the top.

In a cement plant, the cyclone dust collector is used primarily as a pre-separator — the first stage of dust collection on high-temperature, high-dust-loading exhaust streams such as kiln and cooler exhaust. By removing 70–90% of the coarse particulate load, it dramatically reduces the dust burden on the downstream bag filter or ESP — extending bag/electrode life, reducing cleaning frequency, and lowering overall maintenance cost.

Because it contains no fabric or polymer components, the cyclone handles very high gas temperatures (often up to 400–600°C with refractory lining) and abrasive dust that would damage a fabric filter. LIMING manufactures single and multi-cyclone (parallel-bank) designs in wear-resistant steel with refractory options for the most demanding cement and industrial applications.

Working Principle of the Cyclone Dust Collector

The cyclone operates on the principle of centrifugal separation. Dust-laden gas is introduced tangentially into the upper cylindrical body, creating a powerful downward spiral. The centrifugal force on the dust particles is many times gravity, throwing them to the wall where they fall into the hopper:

  1. Tangential gas entry: Dust-laden gas enters the cyclone body tangentially at high velocity (12–18 m/s), immediately establishing a downward spiral (outer vortex) along the cyclone wall.
  2. Centrifugal separation: The swirling flow subjects dust particles to strong centrifugal force, pushing them outward against the cyclone wall. Heavier (coarser) particles experience greater force and migrate to the wall faster, while finer particles remain in the gas core longer.
  3. Wall descent & hopper collection: Particles that reach the wall lose momentum, slide down the wall under gravity, and fall into the collection hopper at the bottom, where they are discharged via a rotary valve or screw conveyor.
  4. Inner vortex & clean gas exit: The gas, now separated from the coarse dust, reverses direction at the cone bottom and spirals upward through the central vortex finder as an inner vortex, exiting the top of the cyclone for further treatment (e.g., in a bag filter or ESP) or release.
