How It Works

Working Principle of Disc Pelletizer

The disc pelletizer forms balls through a growth-agglomeration process. Raw meal powder, water, and the rotating disc's rolling action combine to nucleate, grow, and compact spherical green balls via capillary forces and mechanical rolling.

  1. Material feed: Finely ground raw meal (80-90% passing 90μm) is fed continuously onto the inclined rotating disc via a screw feeder or belt. The feed rate is controlled to match the desired production rate.
  2. Water spraying: Atomized water is sprayed onto the raw meal on the disc through adjustable nozzles. The water creates liquid bridges between particles, initiating nucleation — the formation of tiny seed balls. Moisture is typically controlled at 10-14%.
  3. Ball growth: As the disc rotates, the seed balls roll and tumble. They pick up additional raw meal and water, growing layer by layer like a snowball. The rolling action compacts the balls, increasing their density and strength.
  4. Self-classification: The inclined disc creates a size-separating effect. Smaller balls, with less momentum, remain near the bottom of the disc and continue growing. Larger, heavier balls migrate upward and toward the disc rim. This natural classification produces a uniform ball size.
  5. Discharge: When balls reach the target size, they roll over the disc rim and discharge by gravity onto a conveyor or screen. Oversize and undersize balls are screened out and returned to the feed for reprocessing.
  6. Scraper function: A scraper blade cleans the disc bottom and rim to prevent material buildup that would disrupt ball-rolling action. The scraper position is adjustable to maintain optimal disc surface condition.
