About the Hammer Crusher

The hammer crusher is an impact-type crushing machine that reduces material by the high-speed impact of rotating hammers. A rotor fitted with hammers spins at 500-1,000 rpm inside a casing lined with impact plates. Material fed into the top is struck by the hammers, thrown against the impact plates, and further fractured — the combination of impact, shear, and collision rapidly reduces even large feed to the desired size in a single pass.

In cement plants, the hammer crusher is a popular choice for primary crushing of limestone — particularly when the limestone is moderately hard and the plant layout favors a simplified single-stage crushing circuit. It is also widely used for crushing coal, gypsum, chalk, and slag in power stations, building-material plants, and metallurgical facilities. How It Works

Working Principle of Hammer Crusher

The hammer crusher reduces material primarily by high-speed impact. The motor drives the rotor to spin at high speed; hammers mounted on the rotor strike the feed material, throwing it against impact plates and the casing wall. Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Material feed: Brittle material (limestone, coal, gypsum) enters the crushing chamber from the top feed hopper by gravity or via a vibratory feeder.
  2. Hammer impact: The high-speed rotating hammers (500-1,000 rpm) strike the material with high kinetic energy, shattering it on impact. This is the primary crushing action.
  3. Impact plate rebound: The shattered material is thrown at high velocity against the impact plates (breaker bars) lining the casing. The collision causes further fracture. The material bounces back toward the hammers for repeated impact.
  4. Shear & friction: Between hammer strikes, material undergoes shear and friction against the grate bars and other particles, providing additional size reduction.
  5. Grate discharge: Material that has been reduced below the grate bar opening size exits through the bottom grate. Larger fragments remain in the chamber for continued crushing until they reach the required size.
  6. Tramp iron protection: If uncrushable metal enters, the hammers are designed to yield (or a safety coupling trips) to protect the rotor and motor from damage. A magnetic separator upstream is recommended.
