About the Stacker and Reclaimer

The stacker and reclaimer is the core equipment of the cement plant's pre-homogenization stockyard — the stage between raw material crushing and raw mill grinding. After primary crushing, limestone (and coal for the kiln) is stored in long stockpiles. The stacker builds the pile in a controlled chevron or windrow pattern, layering material so that vertical composition variations are averaged out. The reclaimer then cuts across the pile face, reclaiming a blended cross-section that has far less chemical variability than the incoming feed.

Why does this matter? Limestone from a quarry varies in calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) content, silica, alumina, and iron oxide. If these variations reach the kiln unmitigated, clinker chemistry fluctuates, fuel consumption rises, and refractory life suffers. Pre-homogenization with a stacker-reclaimer typically reduces composition variability by 5-10:1, ensuring the raw mill receives a consistent feed and the kiln produces uniform clinker.

Types of Stackers and Reclaimers

Circular Stacker-Reclaimer

Combined stacker and reclaimer rotating around a central column in a circular stockpile (dome or open). Compact footprint — ideal when space is limited. Stacking and reclaiming occur simultaneously on different sections of the pile. Typical for medium-capacity plants.

Bridge Scraper Reclaimer

A bridge spans the longitudinal stockpile, with a scraper chain traveling along it. Reclaims the full pile cross-section in one pass, achieving the highest homogenization ratio. Ideal for large-capacity limestone pre-homogenization in long, linear stockyards.

Side Scraper Reclaimer

Scraper arm moves along the side of a longitudinal pile, reclaiming material from the side face. Lower structure height, simpler civil works. Suitable for medium-capacity applications and materials with limited cohesion.

Working Principle of Stacker and Reclaimer

The system operates in two phases — stacking (building the homogenizing pile) and reclaiming (recovering a blended cross-section). The combination creates the pre-homogenization effect.

  1. Material delivery: Crushed limestone (or coal) is conveyed from the crusher to the stacker via a belt conveyor system. The material arrives with natural composition variability from the quarry.
  2. Stacking (pile building): The stacker boom deposits material in a chevron pattern — thin overlapping layers along the pile centerline. Each layer contains material from a different time period, so vertical composition variations are spread horizontally across the entire pile length.
  3. Pile completion: Once the pile reaches its full length and height, the stacker moves to a second pile (or the pile is rotated in circular stores). The completed pile rests, with its cross-section now representing the average composition of all incoming material over the stacking period.
  4. Reclaiming (blended recovery): The reclaimer's scraper arm or chain cuts across the full face of the pile, reclaiming a vertical cross-section that contains portions of every layer. This recovered material represents the blended average of the entire pile — dramatically reducing composition variability.
  5. Conveying to raw mill: The reclaimed, homogenized material is conveyed via belt conveyor and feeder to the raw mill feed bin, where it is proportioned with other raw materials (clay, iron ore) and ground into raw meal.
  6. Continuous cycle: In a two-pile system, one pile is stacked while the other is reclaimed, ensuring continuous feed to the raw mill without interruption.
