What Is Masonry Cement?

Masonry cement is a specially formulated blended hydraulic cement designed exclusively for masonry mortar — the material that bonds bricks, blocks, and stones together in construction.

Masonry cement is fundamentally different from OPC in both composition and purpose. While OPC is designed for structural concrete — where high compressive strength, low porosity, and durability in exposed conditions are the priorities — masonry cement is optimized for the workability, water retention, and bond characteristics needed by masons laying brick, block, and stone.

The composition reflects this different purpose: masonry cement typically contains only 40-55% Portland cement clinker, with the remainder being limestone powder (or other inert mineral filler) and additive chemicals — primarily air-entraining agents that create microscopic air bubbles for plasticity, and water-retaining agents (cellulose ethers or similar) that prevent the masonry unit from sucking water out of the fresh mortar too quickly.

Mortar made with masonry cement is "buttery" — easy to spread, stays workable longer on the mortar board, and develops a strong mechanical and adhesive bond with the masonry units. It achieves these characteristics at the expense of compressive strength, which is deliberately lower than OPC mortar. This is intentional: a mortar that is slightly weaker than the masonry unit accommodates minor movement and thermal expansion without cracking the units themselves.

Masonry Cement Composition & ASTM Types

Type N

Normal Strength — General Purpose

28-day Min. Strength: 5.2 MPa (750 psi)

Typical Mix: ~50% OPC, ~45% limestone, ~5% additives

The most widely used masonry cement type. Suitable for above-grade, non-load-bearing and general veneer applications. Good workability and the best water retention of the three types.

Type S

Medium Strength — Structural

28-day Min. Strength: 12.4 MPa (1800 psi)

Typical Mix: ~55% OPC, ~40% limestone, ~5% additives

Higher OPC content provides greater strength and durability. Used for structural masonry, below-grade walls, retaining walls, and applications in severe weather exposure zones.

Type M

High Strength — Heavy Duty

28-day Min. Strength: 17.2 MPa (2500 psi)

Typical Mix: ~60% OPC, ~35% limestone, ~5% additives

Highest OPC content for maximum strength. Used for foundations, retaining walls, driveways, and masonry in contact with earth where high compressive strength and durability are paramount.

Additives & Performance Enhancers

  • Air-Entraining Agent (AEA): Creates 8-22% microscopic air voids in the mortar, dramatically improving workability, freeze-thaw resistance, and water retention. Typical dosage: 0.01-0.05% by mass of cement.
  • Water-Retaining Agent: Cellulose ethers or modified starch polymers that increase the water-holding capacity of the mortar, preventing rapid suction of water by dry masonry units — critical for proper cement hydration and bond strength.
  • Limestone Filler: Finely ground limestone powder (typically <45μm) that provides particle packing, reduces cement clinker content and cost, and improves workability without significant strength penalty.
  • Hydrated Lime (optional): Used in some formulations to further improve workability, water retention, and autogenous healing of micro-cracks. More common in traditional mortar cement formulations.
