Controlled expansion cement for grouting and repairs — Types K, M, and S formulations with precisely dosed expansive agents to compensate for drying shrinkage, ensure tight bonding, and pre-stress reinforcement. Complete blending and grinding systems from LIMING Machinery.
Overview
Expanding cement is a hydraulic cement formulated to generate controlled volume expansion — rather than shrinkage — during hydration, solving some of the most persistent problems in concrete construction.
Standard OPC concrete shrinks as it dries and hardens — typically 0.05-0.10% linear drying shrinkage — creating tensile stresses that cause cracking, loss of structural integrity, and poor bond between fresh and hardened concrete. Expanding cement is specifically engineered to counteract this: it expands slightly during early hydration, compensating for subsequent drying shrinkage and, in some cases, generating a net compressive pre-stress in the surrounding reinforcement.
The expansion is generated by an expansive additive that forms expansive mineral phases during hydration. The most common expansive mechanism is the formation of ettringite (calcium sulfoaluminate hydrate) — a needle-like crystal that grows and generates expansion pressure when the expansive component reacts with calcium sulfate in the presence of water. Alternatively, calcium oxide (CaO) or magnesium oxide (MgO) based additives hydrate to form hydroxides with larger volume than the parent oxides.
LIMING provides complete blending and grinding systems for producing expanding cement to ASTM C845 (Standard Specification for Expansive Hydraulic Cement) and ACI 223 guidelines. Our systems deliver precise dosage and uniform distribution of the expansive agent into the cement matrix — critical for consistent, predictable expansion performance.
Product Types
Three main types — K, M, and S — are differentiated by the chemical nature of their expansive agent and the method of blending.
Calcium Sulfoaluminate (CSA) Based
The most widely used expanding cement type. The expansive component is a calcium sulfoaluminate clinker — produced by sintering limestone, bauxite, and gypsum at ~1300°C — interground with OPC clinker at typically 10-20% dosage. When hydrated, the CSA reacts with gypsum to form ettringite, generating controlled expansion. Type K delivers expansion of 0.03-0.10% and is the workhorse for shrinkage-compensating concrete.
Calcium Aluminate + Sulfate Blend
Type M uses a blend of OPC clinker interground with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and additional calcium sulfate (gypsum). The CAC provides the reactive alumina source and the gypsum provides the sulfate for ettringite formation. Type M generally produces higher expansion than Type K and is used for chemical prestressing applications where significant expansion forces are required.
High-C3A OPC + Extra Sulfate
Type S uses a specially formulated high-C3A (tricalcium aluminate) OPC clinker with a higher-than-normal gypsum addition. The elevated C3A content reacts with the extra calcium sulfate to form ettringite during early hydration, producing expansion. Type S is the simplest to manufacture but offers less expansion control than Type K.
Production Process
The process centers on precise dosing and intimate blending of the expansive component with the base cement — homogeneity is everything.
