Overview
Oil well cement is a specially formulated hydraulic cement manufactured for cementing the steel casing in oil and gas wells, where it must perform reliably under the most extreme conditions found in any cement application.
Oil well cement is the critical material that forms the hydraulic seal between the steel well casing and the surrounding geological formation. It must be pumpable as a fluid slurry to the target depth via the narrow annulus between the casing and the borehole wall, then set and develop compressive strength to prevent fluid migration between different subsurface zones, protect the casing from corrosive formation fluids, and provide structural support for the casing string.
Downhole conditions push cement far beyond the limits of construction-grade OPC. Oil well cement slurries must remain pumpable at temperatures exceeding 200°C and pressures above 140 MPa (20,000 psi). The cement must resist sulfate attack from formation brines, prevent gas migration during setting, and maintain mechanical integrity throughout the well's producing life — often 20-30 years or more.

API Classification
API Specification 10A defines eight cement classes (A-H) for different well depths, temperatures, and sulfate environments.
Classes G and H are the most commonly produced oil well cements globally. They are manufactured from a specially formulated clinker and interground with gypsum (no other additives in the manufacturing plant — the additives are blended at the well site by the service company). The key difference: Class G is ground finer (270-330 m²/kg Blaine), while Class H is coarser (220-270 m²/kg) and provides better rheology for deeper wells.
